Artist Statement
Kaori Tamura’s work is created by carving lines and dots into layered surfaces of paint using sharp tools such as needles.
This physical act is equivalent to excavating the strata of inner consciousness and memory, an exploration of the mind through the body. Her process merges with the animistic worldview and the reverence for the Yaoyorozu (the eight million gods) that naturally permeate Japanese culture, as well as with her own layered memories. The resulting pictorial spaces evoke scenes where visibility and invisibility intersect, such as the anonymous depths of the ocean, the far reaches of the universe and the interior of the earth.
Through her works and her process, Tamura advocates for the idea that respect for what is visible and imagination for what is invisible are essential elements for living more deeply and richly in the world.
田村香織の作品制作は絵具を重ねた層を針やニードルといった鋭利な道具で線や点を彫ることにより制作されている。この行為は、意識の深層や内在する記憶の断層を掘り起こすことと同義であり身体を通じた精神の探究でもある。
この制作プロセスと日本文化に自然と息づく八百万、アニミズムの世界観、そして自身の記憶の層が溶け合い、匿名の深海、宇宙の果て、地球内部のような「可視化」と「不可視化」が交差する場面を想起させる絵画空間を生み出している。
田村の作品とそのプロセスを通じて「見えるものへの敬意」と「見えないものへの想像」が世界をより豊かに生きるための本質的な要素であると提唱している。
The Aesthetic of Green
The choice of the color green in Tamura’s work is deeply rooted in both her view of nature and her knowledge of geology. She draws attention to geological research indicating that the Earth’s mantle is primarily composed of a green mineral called peridotite.
Based on this insight, she imagines a hypothetical “green world” spreading far beneath our feet, an invisible stratum of the Earth, which serves as a conceptual point of departure for her artistic practice.
For Tamura, green symbolizes a record of geological time, accumulated layer by layer within the Earth. Through a creative process of layering pigments and carving into their surface, she seeks to access the temporal and material memories embedded within matter, allowing green to function as a conceptual medium, a color that leads the viewer’s imagination toward invisible, subterranean depths.
「緑」という色の選択には、田村の自然観と地質学的知見の双方が関係している。
彼女は、地球内部に広がるマントルの主成分が橄欖岩と呼ばれる緑色の鉱物で構成されているという地質学的研究に着目する。
その知見に基づき、私たちの足元の遥か下に可視化されることのない“緑の世界”が存在するという仮説的な地質的想像を作品制作の起点としている。
田村にとって緑は、地球の長い時間を蓄積した層としての記録を象徴する色彩である。
表層を削るという制作プロセスを通して、視覚の奥にある物質の時間や、地質的な記憶が可視化できない深層の世界へと想像を導くための概念的媒介としての色彩として機能している。
Tempera technique
Kaori Tamura employs a mixed technique with tempera painting as her primary medium. While this classical method is deeply rooted in the tradition of Western art, Tamura does not use it as a stylistic homage. Instead, she reinterprets the technique by shifting the focus to the materiality of the medium itself.
The primary reason behind this choice lies in the material characteristics of tempera. The emulsion, made from a mixture of egg yolk, oil, and pigment, creates a surface ideal for delicate carving. This quality aligns closely with Tamura’s artistic intention, as it provides the necessary layers for her technique of engraving into the surface using fine, sharp tools.
To align her work with contemporary standards, Tamura reinforces each piece with modern materials such as varnishes and protective coatings, enhancing both the durability and long-term stability of the artworks.
Furthermore, Tamura finds symbolic meaning in the egg as a material. She regards the egg as a symbol of the origin of life, a medium deeply connected to inner vitality and memory.
Tempera is a medium that resonates deeply with Tamura’s artistic language, both materially and conceptually.
田村香織は、テンペラ絵画の混合技法を主要な表現手段として用いている。この古典的な技法は西洋美術の伝統に深く根ざしているが田村はそれを様式的なオマージュとしてではなく、素材そのものの物質性に焦点をあてることで再解釈している。
この技法を選んだ主な理由はテンペラの素材特性にある。 卵黄・油・顔料を混ぜて作られるエマルジョン（乳剤）は、繊細な彫り込みに適した画面を形成する。 この性質は鋭利な道具を用いて画面に刻み込んでいく田村の技法と深く呼応しており、層を重ねながらイメージと記憶を掘り起こすために欠かせないものだ。また、作品を環境に適応させるために、ワニスや保護コーティングといった現代の画材で補強を施し、耐久性と長期的な安定性を高めている。
さらに田村はテンペラに用いる「卵」という素材に象徴的な意味を見出しており、卵は生命の起源を象徴し内在する生命力や記憶と深く結びつく媒体として捉えている。
テンペラは素材としても概念としても田村の芸術表現に深く響き合う媒体である。
